StarCraft fans tend to stick closely with the PC version of the game, and with good reason. The game plays flawlessly on the platform, and it makes for the ultimate StarCraft experience. But what about those who aren’t really into the whole PC gaming thing? StarCraft is worth playing, but if people are shying away from it due to the simple fact that it’s a PC game, then they should definitely give the Nintendo 64 version a spin.
Personally, the N64 version of StarCraft—aptly named StarCraft 64—is my version of choice. The N64 controller works well and the button mapping is excellent. The game features that same brand of StarCraft gameplay that fans adore. And the entire game itself is something that the N64 didn’t see much of, so it is a unique title for the console to say the least.
The game does have a few setbacks. The graphics are obviously not as powerful as the PC version’s, but they are not bad by any means. (Although all you current-gen graphics fanatics will beg to differ.) There’s also a bit of slowdown during two-player co-op sessions, but that’s to be expected of older games.
So where can one find a copy of StarCraft 64? It can be tough, but a lot of used game retailers and video stores still carry copies of the game, and usually with a bargain bin price tag that ranges anywhere from $4-$15. If you’re not one to go out and look for older games, then you should definitely hit up an Ebay or Amazon online store. StarCraft can easily be considered a modern classic, so just because you don’t fancy PC gaming doesn’t mean you should miss out on this hit.
