Remember StarCraft: Ghost? What the heck happened to that game anyway? Oh, you don’t remember it? I guess I can’t really blame you. I mean, the game was first announced in 2002, and at the time it was said to be under development by Blizzard along with Nihilistic Software and later Swingin’ Ape Studios. This was back when the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox were running rampant. Well, the PlayStation 2 is still running rampant, but I digress.
StarCraft: Ghost was being developed for the aforementioned home consoles, and it was to be a departure from the sci-fi real-time strategy genre that the original StarCraft fell under. StarCraft: Ghost was a stealth-action video game, and many fans were eagerly looking forward to its release. Unfortunately, the game has yet to see the light of day and, at this point, it doesn’t seem like StarCraft: Ghost will ever come to fruition.
In March of 2006, Blizzard announced that StarCraft: Ghost would be put on hold indefinitely. The devs stated that the reason for this was so that they could explore some options in what is the current generation of video games featuring the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii home consoles. Considered by many to be cancelled and no longer something to look forward to, the folks over at Blizzard have yet to say any such thing and refuse to label the game as ‘cancelled.’
So, will we ever see StarCraft: Ghost? It’s hard to say. Blizzard could easily be exploring opportunities with current-gen consoles as we speak, or it’s quite possible that the project may have been shelved while attention is put on StarCraft II, or maybe, just maybe, the game has really been cancelled, which would kind of be a shame.
If the game is still under development, though, when and on what consoles can we expect to see it? It was originally slated for release on the GameCube. Should we rule out a possible Wii version of StarCraft: Ghost? If the game were to come to Nintendo’s shiny white console, would it be similar to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions? Or would we get some sort of rail shooter or something of that nature?
I for one would like to see StarCraft: Ghost rise from the ashes. If released in the near future, then perhaps it could be the proper distraction until StarCraft II finally hits store shelves. I’m certain it wouldn’t be a game with the amount of replay value the original StarCraft has. I’m guessing it would be a 20- to 40-hour game, which is pretty good anyway. So if Blizzard won’t release StarCraft II just yet, why not release another game in the series? I think people would appreciate that, and it would give us all something to do while we await the StarCraft II launch.
