Blizzard has very vaguely addressed the topic of cut-scenes in StarCraft II. On the game’s official website, it is mentioned that a number of impressive cut-scenes have already been planned, but the details are still sketchy. So far, Blizzard has put the most emphasis on the game’s introductory sequence, but even then the details aren’t very specific.
So what can gamers expect from StarCraft II in terms of cinematics? Blizzard will most likely pull out the big guns and provide top-notch cut-scenes that are a real treat for the eyes, but considering nothing has really been clarified, should fans be at all skeptical? Considering the fact that I am personally a very skeptical—and oftentimes cynical—gamer, I’d normally say, “Yes, StarCraft players need to be wary of the cut-scenes—or lack thereof—in StarCraft II.”
However, I can’t bring myself to saying that. Maybe it’s because I’m putting all my faith into Blizzard’s cinematics team, which will be working alongside the dev team to bring gamers some stunning graphics and cinematic sequences. Or perhaps it’s because I honestly believe StarCraft II will not disappoint in any aspect. Either way, I really believe that Blizzard will make the right decisions when it comes to the game’s presentation.
Do fans have every right to be skeptical? Yes. Will we be treated to dozens of beautifully detailed cut-scenes throughout the game? Perhaps. Will we only get a sporadic cut-scene here and there? Maybe. Whatever Blizzard’s decision is in regards to the game’s presentation values will most likely be in the fan’s best interests, and I for one believe the developers will bring fans a great offering of gameplay mixed with aesthetic excellence.
I love cut-scenes as much as the next guy, but I believe fans can really only expect two possible scenarios. Either Blizzard will fill the game with tons of beautiful, rich cinematics, or they’ll have a few here and there that are of uber-greatness in their art, storytelling, and grandeur. In either case, we can’t complain, can we?
