It’s a Shame

While checking out some StarCraft II videos on YouTube, I stumbled upon a user comment which was a bit disheartening to read. The user—who I won’t mention by name—stated that he had just canceled his preorder. The reason for this disgruntled gamer’s cancelation was due to the fact that the initial release will only feature the Terran storyline, while the game’s second and third expansions will feature Zerg and Protoss campaigns, respectively.

It would be hard to estimate how many more StarCraft fans have already taken similar action, and it’s a real shame that gamers are choosing to cancel their preorders for what is likely to be a very impressive game. Sure, it would be great to have all three race’s campaigns in one box, but the folks over at Blizzard obviously have their reasons for splitting up the races the way they did.

Originally planned as a single release, Blizzard has stated that the reasoning behind the three-part design is to provide gamers a deeper, more engaging experience. Sure, everything could have been released together, but that may have resulted in the package feeling less complete, and it could have caused Blizzard to omit some content. And I ask you, StarCraft loyalists, do you really want to play StarCraft II only to find out that some content had to be left on the cutting room floor due to space and time constraints? I thought not.

What fans are going to get are three separate campaigns that Blizzard plans on filling to the brim with tons of content, story, and action. The individual on YouTube protested against paying full price for one-third of the game, and seen that way, it’s easy to disagree with Blizzard’s approach. However, the first release isn’t just one-third of StarCraft II; it’s a complete game on its own, much like the two expansions will be.

Fans will be treated to an awesome, addictive, and entertaining experience when they play StarCraft II. And it’s comforting to know that after playing the heck out of that first release, two expansions will follow for those who want to continue delving deeper and deeper into the StarCraft mythos.

So gamers, don’t cancel your StarCraft II preorders for fear of only getting part of the game at first. Think of it as a complete game that will spawn two beautiful games of its own that are worthy of your gaming time just as much as the first release. Blizzard is trying to provide us with all the content they possibly can, and if they feel that three separate releases are the best way of doing so, then I’ll jump on board. Oh, and as for you, YouTube user, go back and preorder the game again. Let’s face it: you’re probably going to get the game anyway. At least this way you can pick it up on launch day.
