Sometimes You’re Pretty Fortunate

StarCraft 2 MothershipHello, StarCraft Fan reader.  Today I would like to take a break from all of the literature reviewing, video game idea pitching, and other things I do here on the site.  Today I would like to talk about how fortunate people can be sometimes.  (Obviously, this post will be StarCraft-related, so don’t click the ‘back’ button just yet.  Yeah, I saw you!)  More specifically, I’m going to talk about how fortunate I feel to be able to freelance and write about StarCraft.

I’ll admit that I am an overall happy person.  I’m easygoing.  I don’t let things stress me out too much.  But then there are times when I’m having car trouble, my rent is due and I’m low on cash, and I just don’t seem to be getting plentiful hours from that security gig.  Not to mention sleep.  Oh, how I miss sleep!

So I get frustrated.

I’ve had more than my fair share of mishaps, as I’m sure all of you have had, but at the end of the day, there are a few things that help keep me sane.  My family, my friends, and my beautiful girlfriend all help keep me relatively sane.  (I’m a former art major.  Us artsy types are rarely ever completely sane.  Factor in the fact that I’m a gamer, and you’ve got all kinds of insane tomfoolery going on.)

Then there are video games.  I can give you a laundry list of video games that keep my head screwed on, but for the purpose of keeping this post from exceeding thousands upon thousands of words, I’ll give you four: The Legend of Zelda series, Earthbound, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and StarCraft.  (Didn’t think I’d leave that one out, would ya?)

These are games that I’ve turned to on more than one occasion, and I’m proud to say that.  I’ve never had to resort to even touching any sort of illegal drug, and I’d like to think I’m all the better for it.  That’s why when I was contacted to write for StarCraft Fan, I felt very, very, very fortunate.  Why?  Because I was being given the opportunity to write about not only a game I love, but a game that has gotten me through some tough times.

The year had just started, I wasn’t getting hours with the security company, and school was its usual stressful self.  And here I was being contacted through my profile on another freelancing website, being asked to write about StarCraft.  I’ve written about many games that I love.  I’ve written about Pokémon, Zelda, Paper Mario, Star Fox Adventures, Max Payne, Monster Hunter, the list goes on…  But I had never written about StarCraft.  Don’t get me wrong; writing about Blizzard’s awesome RTS hit crossed my mind more than a few dozen times, I just never got around to doing it.  And here I was one January evening sitting at my computer, when that glorious email popped up on the lower left-hand side of my computer screen.  Suffice it to say I didn’t think twice and jumped at the opportunity to write about StarCraft.

Looking back on it now, I’m pretty proud of the work I’ve produced for the site.  I believe I have a distinct voice when it comes to my writing, and I’m glad to blend that in with StarCraft and share it with you, the StarCraft Fan reader.  I’m a pretty fortunate guy.  I get to write about one of the greatest games of all time, and I get to share my thoughts on everything related to StarCraft with who knows how many readers.  Yeah, after everything is said and done, I think I’m a pretty fortunate guy.
