Now that the final free excerpt from Heaven’s Devils has been posted on StarCraft II’s official website, I thought I’d give a little overview on what we’ve read so far, my reactions, and my expectations from the full novel by William C. Dietz.
First off, let’s talk about the overall story. “Gripping” would be the perfect word to describe. Whenever I started reading, I wanted to continue reading, and I couldn’t wait for the next free excerpt. Heaven’s Devils is just that enthralling. The character development, plot development, and intricate storyline all combined to provide a refreshing, rewarding read that was hard to put down (figuratively speaking, since I was literally reading it off of my computer screen).
Seeing Jim Raynor’s character grow into a hero was one of the most memorable aspects of Heaven’s Devils, and reading about how his priorities changed was also very interesting. The story centers around Raynor after all, so getting to know the main character psychologically among other things offered a great, deep look into the world of StarCraft and its characters.
Personally, I was left in awe after reading each of the free excerpts, and they weren’t even complete chapters! I can only imagine how I will react when I read the full novel. I’ll likely have a hard time putting that read down once I get my greedy little mitts on it!
So what can we expect from Heaven’s Devils in its entirety? What do I expect? I expect more of what made the free excerpts such outstanding pieces of literary art. I expect a great novel that can’t be put down. And I expect a deeper look into everything that I love about StarCraft, and what I expect to love about StarCraft II, from great characters to intense action to sweeping storytelling.
