Excerpt number seven of the thrilling sci-fi action novel Heaven’s Devils by William C. Dietz is up on StarCraft II’s official site, and if you have yet to check it out, you definitely should. This entry covers the seventeenth chapter in the novel, and here we get a little bit of everything that we’ve seen in past chapters. At the end of the chapter is the word “end.” Could this be the last chapter in the story? The last chapter that will be put up for our free reading pleasure? If it is, then it was a blast reading the free excerpts, and I look forward to reading the novel in its entirety.
One thing that makes it seem as if this is indeed one of the final chapters—or possibly the final chapter—in the book is the characters’ development. It seems everyone has matured, grown, and is ready to fight for what they believe in. Raynor is a strong fighter and feels like a leader. Tychus is also a very strong component in the group, and he seems to be one of the most determined men in the squad. Even Harnack, who almost appeared to be one of those guys that never learns shows a great sense of maturity. He takes initiative, and although he ends up equipping a weapon that he isn’t trained with due to certain circumstances—in the process appearing arrogant and in way over his head—his actions are understandable. There’s a crisis going on, and he takes control of the only weapon available to him, a flamethrower. (And he loves it.)
If this is in actuality the final chapter in the story, then it leaves one’s mind asking certain questions, pondering many thoughts, and just opening its imagination. If not, then I, like most of you, look forward to reading more.
