So my girlfriend comes over the other day, and as the evening went on, I realized how thankful I was to have a gamer girlfriend. Not a lot of girls “get” the whole gaming thing—and those who do have all of my respect—and it’s hard for many of them to even see their boyfriend/fiancé/husband just sitting in front of the TV or computer gaming it up. But my girlfriend doesn’t mind that, and it makes me so happy.
I’ve dated girls who enjoy the occasional game, primarily Mario Kart or some type of fighting game, but I never dated what one would call a gamer girl. When my girlfriend first told me she thought StarCraft was cool, I was ecstatic. StarCraft is the type of game that will take up hours upon hours of your time if you allow it to, and the fact that this girl understood and accepted that brought pure joy to my heart.
But I digress. Back to my story. I was hanging out with my lovely girlfriend, and I told her that I needed to get a good amount of writing done as I had a deadline to meet. I felt a bit bad about this because it was our anniversary, and I hate to be the type of guy who’s married to his job. But a deadline is a deadline, and I had to meet it no matter what.
So as I’m typing up the first of three reviews I notice my girlfriend picking up my DS, looking through my games, and choosing one. It was Super Mario 64 DS, a remake of a classic. The whole time I did my writing, she was playing the game. I have no clue how far she got, but it must have been considerably far into the game. I finished my writing, and I told her, “I’m done. Do you want to keep playing? Or do you want to go out or something?”
After about 10 seconds, she managed to get her attention away from the game only to tell me that she wanted to continue playing for a while. And she did. So what did I do? Why, I came back to my computer and started playing some good ol’ StarCraft! For about two hours she continued playing Super Mario 64 DS while I got lost in the world of StarCraft. Afterwards, we had dinner, watched a bit of TV together, and got back to some gaming. Yeah, she went right for the DS and I went straight to my computer. Super Mario 64 DS and StarCraft dominated my anniversary with my girlfriend, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Now I just need to play against her on Battle.net.
