Playing StarCraft After Work

I think it’s already been established how much fun it is to be able to let loose after school and just get some good StarCraft gaming going. I mean, you just had to sit through some lengthy lectures, jot down tons of notes, and sit in those chairs that, despite being so uncomfortable, actually make you want to fall asleep. So if playing StarCraft is so satisfying after a hard day at school, imagine how awesome it must be after a long day at work.

At my job I deal with people; a lot of people. These are people that do their best to irk me. They’re people that no matter how hard I try, they always try to defy me. And I’m sorry, but you cannot defy authority and get away with it. I hate working security, but I do it because I need the money. And it is because I need the money that I actually try at my job and do a fairly good job whenever I’m working. That is why weekends are so stressful. I often question whether I can go on doing what I’m doing. I think to myself that while all of my friends are enjoying their Friday and Saturday nights resting, relaxing, watching movies, hanging out with other friends, or just sitting at home, I’m stuck doing crowd control at a nightclub or directing traffic in the parking lot of a high school during football season. It’s tough, I tells ya, and it doesn’t do much for morale.

But then I look on the bright side. I think to myself, “Hey, at least it’s a job. There are people out there who can’t even make ends meet, the poor souls. I should be happy that I have a job, even if I do detest it.” And that right there boosts my morale significantly.

Then there’s StarCraft. Oh, I’m certain you knew I was headed in this direction. For me, playing video games after work is like drinking a chilled bottle of water after running for 50 minutes straight. It’s refreshing, it’s invigorating, and it’s enlivening. When I work the nightclub, I usually get out at about 5 or 6 in the morning. The sun is literally rising as I drive all the way from Hollywood back to the small city I live in. I get home, take a shower, brush my teeth, and hit the sack. There’s no gameage after working the club. But whenever I work concerts or those dreaded high school events, oh, you better believe I get some good hours of gaming going.

A few weeks ago I worked security for this heavy metal concert. (It might have been hard rock. I really don’t know. I’m more of an indie rock guy myself to be quite honest.) I got a fair amount of work hours, and I was pretty satisfied with the workday. Then I headed home. I was starving, so the moment I got home I made sure to reheat some of my mom’s amazing pasta. It hit the spot, and I was in lazy mode. So what did I do next? I walked to my room, turned on my computer, and started playing—that’s right—StarCraft!

I had played StarCraft after school, but this was much, much different. A lot of my coworkers like getting home from work and watching TV. Not me. I’m not much of a TV person. I get home and I play video games. And I have to say that playing StarCraft after work was just so relaxing. I usually play the game quickly, making fast moves and thinking uber fast. Not this time. I was so relaxed that I was taking my time, making sure not to speed up the gameplay by using the hot key command. Everything was methodical, calculated, and slow-paced. It was entertaining, and it was great not having to worry about making quick moves. (Fighting games after work are a big no-no for me.)

So have you, dear StarCraft Fan reader, ever played StarCraft after work? If so, then isn’t it unbelievably relaxing? If not, then I urge you to do just that. Get home after a long day at work, eat dinner, change into something comfortable, and get your StarCraft on.
