Talking StarCraft at a Frat Party

StarCraft 2 At A Frat Party

Before I say anything else, let me make it clear that I was at a fraternity party last week.  Now, let me clarify even more by saying that I was not at said frat party as an attendee; I was on the job, working security for this frat party, and that was the sole reason for me being there.  I would never be caught dead at a frat party, but this was work, and as I’ve stressed in the past oh so many times, I need the money.

Moving on…

Up until last week, I was only familiar with the Hollywood depiction of the ever lauded frat party.  Funnily enough, Hollywood has done a good job of portraying the antics of these college gatherings quite well.  There’s drinking, smoking, scantily clad women, ridiculous men, and hormones flying in the air.

I was in hell.

As someone who looks down on such behavior, I couldn’t help but get flustered while being surrounded by these highly intoxicated college students who will someday be our doctors and lawyers.  I was approached by spoiled rich kids who were belligerent, rude, and had no respect for authority.  But I will say that there were a few decent individuals in the mix.  These people actually took the time to talk to me a bit; they told me about themselves, and they asked me about my goals, my education, and so on.

More than a few of them were interested in learning more about this whole “games journalism” thing, and they asked if I wrote for any sites.  Obviously I talked about my StarCraft Fan gig, and a few of these people had a lot of wonderful things to say about StarCraft.  One guy talked about how he used to stay up until 4 in the morning playing on Battle.net.  Another talked about how eager he was to play StarCraft II.  One guy even talked about how he loved playing that game after smoking a joint.  (I was none too pleased about this.)  No one I talked to had anything bad to say about StarCraft, and I was glad to hear some of these USC students talking about how they still play the game to this day.

At the end of the day, I was glad to finish my shift and get away from all the tomfoolery at that frat party.  Still, it was kind of fun talking to some of these folks about StarCraft.  It certainly made time pass by a tad faster.
