I recently met my girlfriend’s family for the first time. I was a nervous wreck for what turned out to be quite the pleasant experience. Many topics were discussed, and video games were definitely among the things we all talked about. One of my girlfriend’s brothers eventually brought up StarCraft, telling me, “So I heard you like to play StarCraft.” I confirmed it, and he seemed pleased. That’s all that was said regarding Blizzard’s insanely awesome title.
At least for a while.
We started playing a game of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I like to consider myself quite the Smash master when it comes to that game (or the entire franchise for that matter), and I didn’t go easy on her brothers, racking up the most wins out of the bunch. That’s when StarCraft was brought up again. One of the brothers stated that he got his girlfriend into StarCraft, and that she was slowly improving on Battle.net. Then my girlfriend’s dad mentioned that he liked playing the game too. That was followed up by my girlfriend’s little sister saying that she had just started playing the game. I thought to myself, “Wow, these people are for real!”
That’s when the attention was turned over to me. I was asked by the youngest brother which race I liked using the most. That’s when I told him that I had never actually played the game’s online multiplayer component. I stated that I had the most experience with StarCraft 64, and that I had just recently purchased the PC version of StarCraft.
That’s when the challenge was issued.
He told me that once I started playing online, got the hang of things, and considered myself a formidable opponent, to let him know because he wanted to face me. I love competition, and I tend to thrive on it at times. While I consider myself a great Smash Bros. player, I know there is still a lot for me to learn in terms of StarCraft’s online multiplayer.
I would like to take on my girlfriend’s brother’s challenge by at least this coming summer, which can only mean one thing: I’ll have to begin training. Like Smash Bros before it, I feel that StarCraft might definitely be the type of game that I need to spend exclusive time with before meeting a rival’s challenge, and my training and intense preparation will begin soon.
I look forward to doing some pwning on Battle.net.
