Continuing our series of handy tricks to have when engaged in the heat of battle with a raging Zerg horde or a ragtag group of dastardly Terran scum come two interesting ways to make your opponent’s life even more unpleasant.
Let’s say you’ve got a Zerg army – although “army” doesn’t really apply, since their organizational skills are marginal at best and they’re not big fans of protocol. Oh sure, Kerrigan is in charge but only because she can destroy them at a whim. They’re not going to snap to attention when ordered or hold formation – but that’s not the point.
The point is that their units can burrow. And as long as they are burrowed, they are invisible without the aid of technology. However, even Zerg need to emerge periodically to attack the enemy, and doing so leaves them vulnerable.
What if there was a way to make your units invisible all of the time, and just that much more annoying to those holier-than-thou Protoss?
Well, guess what? There sure is.
It goes like this. Get yourself any old Zerg that can burrow. A Zergling will work to start. Burrow it. Next, go hang out next to some Protoss. When one of their Arbiters comes flying by, its cloak field in full swing, pop the Zergling up at the last possible moment as the cloak sweeps over its position. Done correctly, this technique will grant the Zergling the cloaking benefits of Arbiter permanently. If there’s one thing more irritating than a temporarily invisible Zerg, it’s a permanently invisible one.
But lets say you’re not fielding a Zerg army, so you have no burrowing units, and you decided not to play Protoss because you just weren’t feeling it, so you got stuck with the serviceable and somewhat intelligent Terrans. So, of course, you’re building tanks.
Now, tanks are great. The ability to siege tanks is even greater. A unit that shoots farther than it can see? Sweet! The trouble is, of course, that there is a trade off. Putting a tank into siege doesn’t take that long. Taking it out of siege does. So if suddenly you’re caught in a ground unit rush and your tanks are overwhelmed, chances are you aren’t getting them out of there before they get toasted.
Wouldn’t it be great if those tanks were…say…almost invincible?
Here’s how it works (and this one may not work with later versions of the game). First, build yourself a tank. You probably already knew that was step one here, but you’d be surprised.
Next, you need a building that can fly. Get it up in the air and hover it over the tank. Land it, and just as it is about to touch the ground, siege the tank. It’s a good idea here to hotkey the tank’s siege ability so that it can be done at precisely the right moment.
If done wrong, the building will land on the tank and destroy it.
If done right, the tank will take on the hit points of the building, still be able to shoot, and be invincible to melee units. Do this right and you can get five tanks under one building.
Who’s smart now, Protoss jerks?
