Supply and Demand

So you’re still playing StarCraft: BW. Who isn’t?

Blizzard hasn’t graced every one who wants one with a Beta key, sadly, so for many the only solace until their next opus is released is to play what got them hooked on this franchise the in first place.

Maybe you’re a great StarCraft player. Perhaps you should have gone pro but for a bad wrist or your parents kicking you out of the comfort of their basement into the real world.

Or perhaps you suck. Suck as much as anyone has ever sucked at StarCraft. That doesn’t mean you don’t like it, doesn’t mean you won’t keep playing. It just means you suck.

In either case, though, you’re out to win.

Maybe you win all the time and just want to do it faster. Maybe you never win and would like to see at least one victory before the decade is up. Regardless of your motive, we’ve collected a few more handy tricks that can turn the tide in your favor or give your opponent just that much more grief.

Our first trick is used during any Protoss-on-Protoss match up. Get yourself a Dark Archon and then research the mind control ability. Now, go find yourself an enemy Protoss that might have an upgrade you’d like for your own units – say a Zealot that’s hitting really hard or moving just too damn fast. Mind control the poor fellow, and do with him as you wish.

If you’re lucky your opponent will have researched an upgrade for that type of unit. If so, go take a look at your research structures.

The upgrade will be done for you, free of charge. Any unit you produce from that facility will now have that upgrade, at a cost of zero resources to you. Do this a few times during the course of a battle and you can save yourself a significant amount. Don’t spend it all in one place, though.

Our second trick today is for those perennial underdogs, the Terrans. Sometimes, being a Terran is really tough gig, and there are maps where it is quite apparent from the outset that you have no hope of victory.

When that’s the case, there’s only one thing to do – make it as difficult as possible for your opponent to find every piece of your base and kill you. Here’s how you do it.

Grab an SCV and get them to build a supply depot behind a mineral deposit. Just as he begins building it, click “cancel” on his interface tab, and the building will complete, but appear ghostlike and almost invisible.

Next, build a bunch of these. Ideally, build some behind every mineral field and one behind your enemies’ minerals. Since supply depots don’t attack, it’s unlikely that your opponent will notice them.

At worst, you’ll irritate him when he comes swooping in for the final kill. He’ll be forced to scour the map, looking for your hidden supply depots, costing him time and making you laugh.

At best, he’ll think the game is bugged and give up. If he gives up, you win, by default. No, it’s not a pretty way to win, and no, it’s not particularly glorious. But it’s a win.

Sometimes, those are in short supply.
